Many underwater photographers prefer using their camera's LCD panel for both video and still photography. The primary reason is size; an LCD screen is significantly larger than a standard built-in viewfinder, making it much easier to review and verify shots instantly.
However, shooting exclusively via an LCD screen presents several critical challenges:
Focusing Difficulty: The human eye has a standard minimum focusing distance of approximately 25cm. To see the LCD clearly underwater, photographers must maintain a considerable distance from the screen. This gap fills with water and ambient light, creating glare and making it difficult to discern fine details.
Color Loss: Even a 15–20cm layer of water between your eye and the screen acts as a filter, absorbing warm colors like red and yellow. This causes the LCD image to appear cooler and less vibrant than the actual scene.
Safety Risks: Photographers often become so focused on their framing that they lose track of their environment. Constantly checking a separate dive computer for depth and air is difficult while concentrating on a shot. This can lead to dangerous situations, such as a photographer who accidentally descended from 15m to 44m while following a whale shark, finishing the shoot with dangerously low air.
