Anthony Flavien Berberian
A medical biologist, emergency physician, and sports medicine specialist, he also holds qualifications in disaster medicine, diving medicine, and hyperbaric medicine. As a professional diver and trimix rebreather diver, he has taken part in numerous scientific biodiversity surveys, most notably the “Our Planet Reviewed” expedition in Papua New Guinea, as well as in the Austral Islands, the Marquesas, and New Caledonia.
His passion for photography and the underwater world has led him to dive at countless sites across the globe, contributing to the discovery of numerous previously undescribed species. In collaboration with scientists worldwide, he shares his findings to support global biodiversity inventories.
Together with his colleague and co-author Fabien Michenet and Jacqueline Goy of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris, he discovered, described, and named a new species of jellyfish.
Winner of the prestigious international “Wildlife Photographer of the Year” award, he also won First Prize and Photo of the Year at the “Our World Underwater” competition, and received recognition at the Ocean Art Competition. His photographs have been featured in numerous international publications, including Ça m’intéresse and GEO Magazine (France), GEO (Germany and Spain), Discovery Magazine and DIVE (United States), and BBC Wildlife (United Kingdom). He has also contributed to several major works on marine biodiversity.
He participated in and helped lead a National Geographic expedition and documentary on sharks in Polynesia.
In 2023, he co-authored the book « Peuples des Abysses » in France, with Fabien Michenet—a 320-page volume featuring over 600 photographs—dedicated to the phenomenon of vertical migration observed during black water diving off the coast of Tahiti.
The book reached #1 in its category on Amazon for several consecutive weeks and was awarded the 2024 “Most Beautiful Book of the Year” Prize by the Académie de Marine.
In recognition of his contributions to biodiversity research, a species of seashell and a nudibranch have been named in his honor.
